Ryan P. Adams, professor of computer science at Princeton University, has been appointed the director of the Undergraduate Certificate Program in Statistics and Machine Learning at the Center for Statistics and Machine Learning, effective July 1.

Adams joined the Department of Computer Science last year. He earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering and computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a doctoral degree in physics from the University of Cambridge. He previously held positions as a Harvard faculty member teaching machine learning courses,  head of the advanced technologies group at Twitter, and a research scientist at Google Brain. He was a co-founder and CEO of tech startup Whetlab, which was acquired by Twitter in 2015.

The certificate program, open to all Princeton students, responds to the growing student interest in modern data science, machine learning and statistics. It provides the opportunity to learn about the theoretical frameworks behind these disciplines and var-ious domain applications. The program culminates with a poster session presentation of an independent research project.
